For many women of this generation, that promise was reinforced by what we witnessed in our own homes. We were raised by mothers who lived within new freedoms—women who built careers, sustained families, and exercised independence in ways that had not been widely possible before them. Their lives expanded our understanding of what marriage could hold.

In recent years, public reflections from women like Michelle Obama have helped bring greater honesty to conversations about long-term partnership.
